What is an Arbor and what is it used for?
An arbor is a small vertical structure found within gardens that provides shelter and privacy. An arbor can also be used to separate different sections of a garden and create pathways or even be a stylistic choice and blend in with the garden itself. The roof and sides of an arbor are made using an open framework to allow for vine and flower decorations.
Construction of an Arbor
Arbor’s are made from two vertical poles and often (but not always) arched roof. They can be attached to fences and walls or stand on their own and are typically made from either wood or wrought iron. Arbors are rather simple constructions consisting of columns, beams, and arches. Arbors are made for walking through, so they should never go below average door height. It’s also important to consider maintenance when installing an arbor, as certain plant types will require more or less cleaning up than others when attached to the arbor.
Maintaining Arbor ornaments
Even though they are meant to adorn your arbor with colorful decorations, the flowers and vines looped throughout the arbor’s trellis still require the same care as any other. So be sure to fertilize, prune, and water these plants regularly.
Although many times misconstrued to be the same thing, trellises, arbors, and Pergolas are three different garden appliances. A trellis is a latticework made to support vines and plants (trellises are commonly built into the sides and roof of an arbor) and while Pergolas are also meant to catch vines and plants, they support an open roof structure which Arbors do not. Pergolas also do not have side structures, only poles that hold up the rooftop. Gazebos are also different from arbors in that they have a solid roof structure and are much larger. This also separates them from both trellises and pergolas. Always make sure to know just what you want before making a decision. Our workers at Longview Professional Landscapers and Outdoor Living Designs can and will construct all outdoor design appliances!
Installing an arbor is a rather simple process, with four anchors being hammered into the ground and the arbor itself placed close by. The anchors are then screwed into the arbor. If the anchors are a different color than the arbor itself (which they likely will be) painting them the same color is easy and keeps things looking professional and smooth!
